Why Nigerian creators get paid last

The delay between a Nigerian artist earning and being paid is longer than for a comparable artist in London or Los Angeles. The reasons are structural.

One: reporting lag

Streaming revenue is reported on a delay, typically one to three months, then paid on another delay. By the time money moves, the streams that generated it are two quarters old.

This affects everyone. It affects you more if you have no advance and no other income smoothing the gap.

Two: the intermediary stack is longer

An artist signed directly to a distributor with an office in their country has fewer parties between them and the money. An artist reaching the same platforms through a regional aggregator, which reaches an international distributor, which reaches the platform, has more.

Each link adds both a percentage and a delay.

Three: currency and transfer friction

Revenue is earned in dollars, converted, and transferred. Each step costs and each step takes time. Transfer routes that are routine within Europe or North America are slower and more expensive into Nigeria.

The rate you get is rarely the rate you saw quoted.

Four: verification asymmetry

Payout verification — identity documents, bank confirmation, tax forms — is designed around documents that are standard in some countries and not others. A creator whose paperwork does not match the expected shape waits longer, sometimes indefinitely.

This is the least discussed and often the most damaging, because it is invisible. Nothing was refused. It is simply still pending.

What follows from this

None of it is solved by working harder. It is solved by shortening the chain, holding balances in a currency that does not lose value while it waits, and designing verification around the documents people actually have.

We have not solved all of these. Currency and verification are genuinely hard, and anyone claiming otherwise has not tried. But naming the problem correctly is a precondition for working on it.
