The payout gap: where creator money actually goes

Follow one stream through the system and the shape of the problem becomes obvious.

The chain

A listener pays a monthly subscription. That money enters a pool. At the end of the month the pool is divided by total streams across the service, producing a per-stream rate. Your streams are multiplied by that rate.

Before it reaches you it passes through the rights holder — often a label — then a distributor, then possibly an aggregator, each taking a percentage of what remains rather than of the original.

Why percentages compound badly

This is the part that is routinely misunderstood. If three parties each take 30%, they have not taken 90%. They have taken about 66%, because each takes 30% of a progressively smaller number.

That sounds better until you notice it also means no single party looks unreasonable. Everyone took under a third. The artist still received a fraction.

Diffuse responsibility is the mechanism. There is no villain in the chain, which is precisely why it persists.

The currency layer

For a Nigerian artist there is another step. Revenue is calculated in dollars or euros, converted at a rate you do not choose, on a date you do not control, and often held before transfer.

Between the exchange rate and the transfer fee, a payout can lose a further slice before it lands.

What actually changes the outcome

Direct payment removes most of the chain. A tip is one transaction between two parties. A subscription is a monthly relationship with one intermediary instead of four.

This is not a claim that direct support replaces streaming income. For most artists it will not, at least not soon. But it is money that arrives in weeks rather than quarters, at a rate you can calculate in advance, from people who chose you specifically.

That is a different kind of income, and for a working independent artist the difference between quarterly and monthly is often the difference between continuing and stopping.
