Tips are not charity

Tipping makes a lot of creators uncomfortable. That discomfort is usually about framing, and framing is fixable.

Why asking feels bad

Because it is being framed as asking for help. Help is what you ask for when something has gone wrong.

But a tip is not aid. It is someone assigning value to something that already gave them something. The transaction already happened — they listened, they watched, it meant something. The tip is them completing it.

The wrong ask

Please support me, I'm struggling, anything helps.

This works once, on people who already know you, and it costs something each time. It makes the relationship about your need rather than about the work. And it caps out fast, because it appeals to guilt, and guilt does not renew.

The better ask

If this was worth something to you, there's a tip button.

No apology, no explanation, no story about rent. It treats the listener as someone capable of deciding what your work is worth, which is more respectful than the alternative.

Say it once, clearly, and move on.

Where to put it

At the end of something, not the beginning. After the song, after the stream, at the bottom of the post. Someone who has just finished a thing you made is in a completely different frame of mind from someone who has just arrived.

What to do when someone tips

Say thank you, once, specifically. Not a public shout-out unless they would like one — some people would find it embarrassing.

And then do not treat them differently in ways they did not ask for. They wanted to give you money for your work, not to become a patron with obligations.
