Scheduling releases and why timing is oversold

The best day to release is the one you can prepare properly for.

There is a lot of confident advice about release timing. Most of it is repeated rather than tested.

The received wisdom

Friday, because that is when the charts week starts and when the big playlists refresh.

This is true and mostly irrelevant to you. It matters if you are competing for playlist placement at scale. If your release is going to your own audience, chart weeks are not the mechanism.

What actually affects it

Whether you are available. The hours after you publish are when you can respond, share, reply, push. Releasing the day before you travel wastes that.

Whether the people you want are around. If your audience is largely Nigerian, think in WAT and think about when people are actually on their phones. If it is split across continents, pick the one that matters more and accept the trade.

Whether you are ready. Artwork, description, the clip, the message to the people who will share it. A Tuesday release you have prepared for beats a Friday one you have not.

Scheduling

Set the date, set the status to scheduled, and it publishes itself. This matters more than it sounds, because it separates finishing from publishing.

If the work is done on Tuesday and going out on Friday, Tuesday-you is not tempted to push it out early, and Friday-you does not have to be at a computer.

The bigger factor

What you do in the week after release matters more than the day of it. Most independent releases are published and then abandoned within forty-eight hours, which is roughly when the people who were not paying attention on day one might have noticed.

Plan the week, not the day.
