Quitting, and how to do it well
Some people should stop. Almost nobody talks about how to stop properly.
Most writing for creators assumes the goal is to continue. Sometimes the right decision is to stop, and there is a better and worse way to do it.
The distinction worth making
There is a difference between this is hard and I am tired and I do not want this life.
The first is a normal condition of doing anything difficult, and it passes. The second is information, and it does not.
People quit during the first while telling themselves it is the second. People also stay for years in the second while telling themselves it is the first. Both are expensive.
If you are stopping
Say so. A short message to the people who followed you. Not an explanation, not an apology — just that you are stopping. People who cared about your work would rather know than wonder.
Leave the work up. Delete it in five years if you still want to. Songs get found late, and there is no version of this where deleting it helps you.
Withdraw your balance and export your records. Do it now, while you still care enough to do it properly.
Keep your accounts. Not for a comeback — so the decision stays reversible without a cost.
If you are pausing
Say that instead, and give a rough return. Back in the autumn is enough. The people who follow you are not owed a schedule but they respond to honesty, and a stated pause is enormously better than a silent disappearance.
The thing worth saying
Stopping is not failure at something that was supposed to work. Most people who make things stop at some point, including many who were good at it, and a decision to spend your life differently is a decision, not a defeat.
The work you made still exists and still meant something to the people it reached. That does not get retroactively withdrawn because you stopped making more of it.
